Elizabeth Reid Dotson's practice concentrates exclusively on defending employers and insurance carriers in workers' compensation matters. Her expertise is negotiating favorable resolutions in the employers' defense. Ms. Dotson counsels employers on the workers' compensation process, including compliance with statutory requirements, effective claims handling, investigations and scene documentation, and helps employers navigate the effects of preexisting injuries, employment discipline and termination during a pending workers' compensation matter.
Ms. Dotson often litigates cases before Kansas and Missouri administrative law judges, the Kansas Workers' Compensation Board of Appeals, the Missouri Labor and Industrial Relations Commission and both the Kansas and Missouri Courts of Appeals. Her abilities in occupational disease cases, drug and alcohol defenses and alleged mental injuries frequently lead to successful outcomes. She routinely speaks to employers and attorneys in the workers' compensation field on updates in Kansas and Missouri law, including the Council for Education Management, the Lorman Education Seminars and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.
A shareholder at McAnany, Van Cleave & Philips, Ms. Dotson served as the assisting attorney in Endicott v. Display Technologies, a Missouri Supreme Court decision that set the standard for date of accident in repetitive trauma claims and led to the change in the Workers' Compensation Act, and in Hawthorne v. Magasteyer, successfully defending a claim of alleged mental injuries, which was upheld by the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. She served on the editorial board for The Family Law Quarterly, a national law journal, won oral advocacy awards and graduated with honors from Washburn University School of Law.
Ms. Dotson was a Kansas Supreme Court-approved mediator in the areas of core, civil and domestic mediation and mediated cases for the Kansas Human Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She served an approved mediator in Missouri, Kansas and New Mexico and volunteered her time to mediate community disputes.
Passionate about community involvement, Ms. Dotson serves on the board of directors for the Children's Museum of Kansas City and is active in the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association's workers' compensation committee. She is a member of the Young Lawyers Association of Kansas City and the Women Lawyers Association. Ms. Dotson enjoys spending time with her husband, Ken, and their young sons.
