The managing shareholder of the firm's St. Louis office, Stephen McManus concentrates his practice to representing employers and insurance carriers' workers' compensation claims and litigating civil defense matters. Mr. McManus works with clients to reduce the number and severity of workers' compensation claims. He defends numerous insurance carriers and their insureds in areas such as general negligence, premises liability, contract matters, professional liability and other general litigation.
Mr. McManus successfully defends cases in front of the Missouri Supreme Court, the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern and Western Districts, the Division of Workers' Compensation and the Labor and Industrial Relations Commission. He defended employers in the Endicott and Oswald cases, both Missouri Supreme Court decisions defining the date of accident in repetitive trauma claims under the last exposure rule. He successfully defended the employer in Null v. Yellow Freight, where the administrative law judge found that the claimant's accident and four subsequent surgeries did not arise out of or in the course of the claimant's employment. In the Hanson v. Huzzah Valley case, Mr. McManus argued the claim did not arise out of an in the course of the claimant's employment. In the Dexter Mitchell v. Missouri Recycling case, the administrative law judge denied death benefits to the dependents of the deceased employee, finding that the claimant's alcohol and cocaine influences were the accident's proximate cause.
Mr. McManus speaks at many seminars on Missouri and Illlinois workers' compensation benefits and frequently lectures on Medicare set-aside use and requirements in workers' compensation and general litigation. He has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America® publication in workers' compensation since 2010. Mr. McManus is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell, has been listed in St. Louis Magazine's Best Lawyers, and has been listed as a Super Lawyer® in Thompson Reuters™ magazine since 2009.

He and his wife, Shelly, have five children, and he spends much of his free time coaching their sports teams.
