Robert Wonnell has defended multiple clients throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. He has appeared in federal and state court, including the Kansas Court of Appeals and argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Mr. Wonnell handles a variety of cases including labor and employment claims, workers' compensation, subrogation recovery, and general liability defense. Mr. Wonnell's most recent jury trial concluded with a defense verdict finding the plaintiff 95% at fault.
Mr. Wonnell served as the assisting attorney in the published cases, Tate v. Junction City, 32 Kan.App.2d 832 (2004) and Miller v. American Royal, 140 S.W.3d 74 (2004). In Tate, the Kansas Court of Appeals offered clarification of the going and coming rule in Kansas, ultimately denying benefits. In Miller, the Missouri Court of Appeals overturned the compensability finding of the Labor and Industrial Commission's award of benefits regarding statutory employment. The Kansas Court of Appeals, after a review of his brief submitted regarding complex medical causation issues, stated that Mr. Wonnell had "provided [the Kansas Court of Appeals] with an extremely well written brief(s)." Stutzman v. City of Lenexa, 33 Kan.App.2d 160, 99 P.3d 145 (2004).
Mr. Wonnell often speaks at seminars on various areas of employment law, offering an opportunity to discuss the application of the law with clients, as well as providing educational presentations on updated case law and statutory changes.
A shareholder with McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips, P.A., Mr. Wonnell served on the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy and competed in the National Moot Court Competition in law school, advancing to the regional competition. He is a two-time recipient of the C.A.L.I. Award and was recognized by the American Board of Trial Advocates Kansas Chapter for "Outstanding Performance in Trial Advocacy." Mr. Wonnell also serves in a variety of positions for Fellowship Bible Church in Gardner, Kansas and is active in the Kansas City Kansas Area Chamber of Commerce.
